BCM21551 3G Phone on a Chip, which combines a high-speed HSUPA 3G baseband, a multi-band radio frequency (RF) transceiver, Bluetooth® 2.1 with enhanced data rate (EDR) technology, an FM radio receiver and an FM radio transmitter (for car stereo music playback). The device also features advanced multimedia processing, up to five Megapixel camera support, and 30 frame per second video with TV Out, as well as support for the HSUPA, HSDPA, WCDMA and EDGE cellular protocols. It can even be paired with other Broadcom devices, such as Wi-Fi® and GPS, PMU, or the new VideoCore® III mobile multimedia processor. No competing cellular baseband chip has ever achieved this level of integration, which drives down cost, power and size, while enabling an advanced level of functionality. This makes the BCM21551 an ideal choice for both mass market high volume 3G feature phones as well as smartphones running an open OS such as Symbian®, Windows Mobile®, or Linux.

BCM21551 is an innovative HSPA system-on-a-chip (SoC) that features unprecedented integration of advanced smartphone features. The BCM21551 integrates dual ARM11 processors to provide open OS support, and features full stereo music capabilities for both headset and stereo speakers as well as an integrated 5-band graphic equalizer and digital mixing capabilities for superior audio performance. The BCM21551 also integrates advanced MIPI serial interfaces for the LCD and image sensor (which facilitates a low power interface for the BCM21551 and the LCD in the phone) and the analog physical layer required for the 480Mbps high speed USB2.0 applications that enable the rapid transfer of multimedia files to and from the handset.
The BCM21551 is an advanced single-chip 65-nm HSUPA/WCDMA/ EDGE SoC, with fully integrated 3G RF transceiver, BT, FM and mixed signal analog. Designed on 65-nm technology, the BCM21551 offers the lowest power consumption, highest integration, and lowest cost HSUPA solution. The modem supports HSUPA 5.8 Mbps, 7.2 Mbps HSDPA, WCDMA 384K with Class 33 EDGE modem and integrates all analog and digital functions on a single, monolithic piece of silicon for lowest cost. The integrated BCM21551 RF transceiver design delivers the highest RF performance while achieving the lowest power consumption through innovative architecture and circuit design. The RF transceiver draws upon Broadcoms extensive experience in pure digital CMOS radio design and directly leverages Broadcoms BCM2085 and BCM2090 CMOS radio products. Critical radio performance, while using pure digital CMOS for radios, is assured through the use of proprietary, autonomous, real-time calibrations within the radio. The BCM21551 cellular processor has fully integrated audio support for driving ear piece, ringer, stereo headsets and stereo line drivers for support of external Class D amplifiers for loudspeaker. External audio/video coprocessors are not required for the handset design. Broadcoms proprietary M-Stream high-performance modem technology and SAIC advanced signal processing technologies improve cellular handset reception and voice quality while increasing network capacity, without sacrificing call quality. The BCM21551 utilizes an advanced release 6 compliant direct Matrix inversion (DMI) equalizer for highest HSDPA data throughput in the most challenging radio conditions, thus offering high performance without the need for costly receiver diversity. SECURITY Enhanced security is provided with OTP and dedicated hardware blocks to provide secure Boot, memory and DRM functions. The embedded one-time programmable (OTP) bits allow the software to boot securely and check IMEI security prior to network activation. OTP bits can also be used by high-level applications to verify the integrity of Digital Rights Management (DRM) functions.
